California-born photographers invited to apply for the 2009 James D. Phelan Art Award in Photography.
The 2009 James D. Phelan Art Award in Photography is administered by SF Camerawork in conjunction with The San Francisco Foundation, and will honor two California-born artists. In addition to a $3,750 cash prize, each award winner is invited to participate in an exhibition at SF Camerawork.
The James D. Phelan Art Awards were established by the trust of James D. Phelan (1861-1930), former San Francisco Mayor, United State Senator, and arts supporter, to recognize the achievements of California-born artists in a variety of disciplines. The Phelan Art Award is also given in printmaking, film, and video and is part of the Arts Awards Program at The San Francisco Foundation.
Eligibility
Application for the 2009 Award in Photography is open to any California-born artist. Current California residency is not required. Proof of birthplace will be requested. Past winners of the James D. Phelan Art Award in Photography are ineligible.
Jurors
The 2009 Award will be juried by Allan deSouza, Professor of New Genres, San Francisco Art Institute Cathy Kimball, Executive Director, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art.

The 2009 winners will be announced April 3, 2009.
