Aperture Lecture Series at the Hammer March 4: Zwelethu Mthethwa


March 4 at 7pm at the Hammer Museum; 10899 Wilshire Blvd, Westwood

Zwelethu Mthethwa, (Aperture, March 2010) is the artist’s long-awaited first comprehensive monograph, providing an overview of his work to-date and featuring the stunning portraits that have brought him international acclaim. Mthethwa’s work has been featured in over thirty-five international solo exhibitions and numerous group shows, including the 2005 Venice Biennial and Snap Judgments at the International Center of Photography, New York. Born in Durban, South Africa, he now resides in Cape Town. A book signing will follow the lecture.

ALL HAMMER PUBLIC PROGRAMS ARE FREE. Tickets are required, and are available at the Billy Wilder Theater Box Office one hour prior to start time. Limit one ticket per person on a first come, first served basis. Hammer members receive priority seating, subject to availability. Reservations not accepted, RSVPs not required.

Parking is available under the museum for $3 after 6:00p.m.

Internship Opportunities at Red Hen Press


We are looking for those interested in being interns/volunteers for
approximately 6 months.
We ask that interns work at least 10 hours/week and come into the office
at least 2 times/week. We offer a gas stipend but the internship itself
is unpaid.



Internships currently offered:

Production: responsibilities include preparing manuscripts for design,
entering corrections, reviewing galleys, archiving, and managing
inventory.

Development: responsibilities include researching appropriate funding
organizations, assisting in copywriting and proofreading LOIs, and
updating our development databases.

Photo LA January 14-17 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium


Dozens of international galleries and publishing houses will be showcasing vintage and contemporary photography. This year marks the debut of the Lapis Press and Schaden's The La Brea Matrix, in which six German art photographers use Stephen Shore's 1975 picture of the corner of Beverly and La Brea as a point of reference. There will also be a sneak preview of the Museum of Latin American Art's exhibit, Changing the Focus: Latin American Photography (1990-2005)

Call for Entries: Carnival: Newspace in Portland, Oregon





Newspace Center for Photography invites photographers to submit images for our Annual Themed Exhibition. This year, with the theme “Carnival”, we are seeking work that has been shot at carnivals, fairs, celebrations or other such events with a festive atmosphere. Selected photographs will be shown in the Newspace gallery February 5th - 28th 2010.

The competition is open to photographers using any type of photographic process, color or black & white, traditional or computer generated/manipulated images. There are no restrictions on the date images were created. Portland photographer and Newspace Director Chris Bennett will be selecting images for the exhibition.

The entry fee is $5 per image and you may enter as many images as you like. Newspace members may enter three images at no charge.

Fill out the entry form which can be downloaded from our website and submit it with your images on a CD. Entry materials will not be returned.

The images need to be 300 dpi jpg files no larger than 7 inches in its longest dimension. Each jpg file must be titled with your last name, first initial, "underscore" and the correlating number to match the entry form. For instance Mike Smith would be SmithM_1.jpg. The CD itself must be labeled with the photographer's name. Materials will not be returned.
Sorry no slides or prints.
The entry deadline is Friday, December 18th 2009 (postmarked).

Selected images will be on display in the Newspace gallery February 5th through 28th 2010, with an opening reception Friday, February 5th 7-10pm.
Awards will be given to the top three place winners and to the "Gallery-Goers' Choice Award" winner.

Those accepted into the show will be notified by End of December 2009 and will be posted on our website.
