ONWARD ‘09: 2nd Annual Juried Photography Competition

Project Basho is pleased to announce ONWARD ‘09, annual juried photography competition, exclusively featuring new and emerging photographs’ work.

This year, we are inviting Peter Barberie, Curator of Photographs at Philadelphia Museum of Art as juror. The deadline is November 14. For more information, please download the entry form from our website.

Theme for the competition is open, and any photographic medium including but not limited to historical processes, traditional silver printing, chromogenic printing and digital processes can be submitted for consideration. Selected photographers’ work will be featured in a group exhibition at Project Basho Gallery. Further recognition will be awarded in the form of cash awards and opportunities for a two-person show at Project Basho Gallery.

Last year’s competition attracted close to 300 photographers nationally and internationally who submitted over 1200 images. Andrea Modica, the last year juror selected 59 photographs for the show at Project Basho Gallery, which was held in January and February 2008. Lecture: Curating Contemporary Photography by Charlotte Cotton

Charlotte Cotton, Curator and Department Head of Photographs at LACMA, will be speaking at OTIS College of Art and Design, Ben Maltz Gallery on November 10 from 7:30-9.

The lecture is being held in conjunction with the exhibition, "When It's a Photograph" which examines variations on the traditional photographic image.

Student Scholarship to Attend SPE National Conference in Dallas



The Society for Photographic Education is offering 2 opportunities for photography students to attend the national SPE Conference in Dallas. Going to SPE as a student is a great way to meet other photography students and professionals from around the country, learn more about graduate programs, attend lectures and demonstrations, learn more about new photo materials and supplies, have your portfolio reviewed, and attend lectures given by prominent artists.

The Freestyle Crystal Apple Award is for an undergraduate who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in black and white photography and carries an award of $5000 cash.

The SPE student award features a free membership to SPE, conference fee waiver, and a $500 travel stipend.

AXE/Los Angeles Unscene Competition




Free to submit 20 images! Proximity, new body fragrances by AXE, is putting local Los Angeles artists on assignment by asking them to visually capture the new scents through photography. LA participants can submit up to 20 photos that bring to life the essence of one selected fragrance, Bergamot, which is edgy, masculine and vibrant.
