The Government and Foundation Relations Department is seeking an undergraduate or graduate intern who is actively enrolled in an art history, museum studies, English, liberal arts, or other applicable program for Summer 2010.

Description

The desired intern will be a proficient writer, have strong analytical skills, and be able to work up to 20 hours per week for college credit. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer, have strong analytical skills, and be proficient with Internet, Excel, and MS Word. He/she must be able to type 50 words per minute and have good organizational skills.

This is a non-paid internship, but school credits will be awarded. Intern duties primarily entail prospect research to identify new funding opportunities and preparing written documents, including letters of inquiry, status reports, grant proposals, and acknowledgment letters. Other responsibilities include filing and fulfilling donor stewardship, such as mailing VIP passes and exhibition catalogues. There may also be the opportunity to assist with special events for the Development Department, such as opening night receptions and private viewings of exhibitions.

LACE Archives Internship

The LACE Archives Intern will work closely with the LACE Archives Fellow to make LACE's archival holdings useful and available for research and integrate materials from LACE's archives into exhibition and publication initiatives. Through his or her involvement with the archives, the intern will also participate in the development of a major exhibition and publication project at LACE titled Los Angeles Goes Live: Exploring a Social History of Performance Art, 1970-1983.

LACE's archives are an invaluable site of cultural history for Los Angeles, as LACE has been a crucial participant in the city's artistic production for over three decades, often housing artwork that is experimental in nature. This LACE Archives Internship is an opportunity to work with LACE's unique collections, which include documentation of art exhibitions and performances held at LACE since 1978, extensive holdings of photographic and video material and records pertaining to the institution's history.
The LACE Archives Internship will provide an interested individual with the opportunity to gain training and experience working with archival collections. In addition to providing training in widely held standards and protocol of collections management, it also offers a unique introduction to working with collections related to experimental and variable media art. The Archives Intern will:
- Learn first-hand about collections-management issues and make use of an extensive database specifically designed by Franklin Furnace Archive to meet the needs of collections of conceptual and other variable media art;
- Learn about ways that archival collections are made publicly accessible and work with the LACE Archives Fellow to integrate the catalogue of LACE's holdings into searchable online databases;
- Process a variety of material from LACE's recent exhibitions and events (e.g. photographs, video, press clippings, correspondence), attending to preservation concerns and updating the archives database as needed;
- Respond to research inquiries about LACE's archive and facilitate the use of collections by LACE staff members and visiting scholars and artists;
- Digitize selected items from LACE's collections, including videos, slides and printed matter;
- Work with the LACE Archives Fellow to develop online resources that will provide broad access to, and contextualization of LACE's digitized collections, including project-specific and thematic websites;
- Think creatively about how to generate broad interest in LACE's archival collections; and
- Serve as a liaison with LACE's webmaster to facilitate the integration of documents from the archive into LACE's website.

Zwelethu Mthethwa, (Aperture, March 2010) is the artist’s long-awaited first comprehensive monograph, providing an overview of his work to-date and featuring the stunning portraits that have brought him international acclaim. Mthethwa’s work has been featured in over thirty-five international solo exhibitions and numerous group shows, including the 2005 Venice Biennial and Snap Judgments at the International Center of Photography, New York. Born in Durban, South Africa, he now resides in Cape Town. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Call for Entries: Carnival: Newspace in Portland, Oregon

Newspace Center for Photography invites photographers to submit images for our Annual Themed Exhibition. This year, with the theme “Carnival”, we are seeking work that has been shot at carnivals, fairs, celebrations or other such events with a festive atmosphere. Selected photographs will be shown in the Newspace gallery February 5th - 28th 2010.

The competition is open to photographers using any type of photographic process, color or black & white, traditional or computer generated/manipulated images. There are no restrictions on the date images were created. Portland photographer and Newspace Director Chris Bennett will be selecting images for the exhibition.

The entry fee is $5 per image and you may enter as many images as you like. Newspace members may enter three images at no charge.

Fill out the entry form which can be downloaded from our website and submit it with your images on a CD. Entry materials will not be returned.

The images need to be 300 dpi jpg files no larger than 7 inches in its longest dimension. Each jpg file must be titled with your last name, first initial, "underscore" and the correlating number to match the entry form. For instance Mike Smith would be SmithM_1.jpg. The CD itself must be labeled with the photographer's name. Materials will not be returned. Sorry no slides or prints.
The entry deadline is Friday, December 18th 2009 (postmarked).

Selected images will be on display in the Newspace gallery February 5th through 28th 2010, with an opening reception Friday, February 5th 7-10pm.
Awards will be given to the top three place winners and to the "Gallery-Goers' Choice Award" winner.

25 Paid Summer Internships in the Arts Available through the Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program

Los Angeles County, through its Arts Commission, has given grants totaling $500,000 to 95 performing, literary, media and municipal arts organizations throughout Los Angeles County to support paid internships for college undergraduates in summer 2009.

Descriptions of and contacts for the 125 internship positions are posted on the Arts Commission's web site. Go to www.lacountyarts.org, click on Internships, then 2009 Internship Positions.

Eligibility requirements for the internships have been expanded in 2009. Graduating seniors who complete their undergraduate degrees by September 1, 2009 are eligible, as well as undergraduates. Applicants must have completed at least one semester of college by June 2009 and be currently enrolled (full-time) in a community college or a four-year university. Applicants must be a resident in and/or attending school in Los Angeles County.

Interns are paid $350 per week, for 40 hours a week, for 10 weeks and take part in educational and arts networking activities. Through the program, interns gain a deeper understanding of the work involved in nonprofit arts administration and the role of the arts in a community, and develop business skills that can be put to use in their future careers. Internship host organizations help mold and shape potential new workers in the arts field who may go on to arts leadership positions on staffs, boards or as volunteers.

Photography students are invited to participate in a juried exhibition of the best of American College and University student photography. The work will be exhibited at the 2009 Pingyao, China International Photography Festival, held each September in the 2,700-year-old walled village, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Students are eligible to submit up to three high resolution images (no size limitation) on a non-returnable CD or DVD. Included on the CD/DVD must be thumbnail versions of the images, titles, sizes, identification of the college they attend and a brief (50 word or less) artist statement intended for translation. Postmark deadline for submission is May 15, 2009. There is no entry fee. Accepted entries will be professionally printed and prepared for exhibition in China.

his year’s photography competition will call on amateur and professional photographers to submit photos of recession-conscious trends in four categories: fashion, food, home/lifestyle, and graphic arts. Just like Scarlett O’Hara’s famous curtain dress, fashionable consumer goods nowadays rely on creative repurposing and innovatively inexpensive fabrics for the budget- and environmentally-conscious American consumer. Original photos that celebrate actual products or fantasy products and lifestyle, whether unique or mass-produced, are sought for this year’s competition. Photos of an advertising or editorial nature are both acceptable. Black and white or color photos are acceptable. Photos may have text incorporated in the photo (i.e. an advertising slogan), or in the graphic arts category, be the logo that signifies the product or service. The entry form will allow for text describing the photo(s) in greater detail.

Influential maestro of found-footage, Bruce Conner (1933-2008) was legendary for his mastery of assemblage, drawing, collage and film. At once voluptuous and razor-edged, Conner's compact, cinematic bombs are an inspired mix of heartfelt meditation and political satire. BRUCE CONNER’S EXPLOSIVE CINEMA: A TRIBUTE is a two-night memorial tribute and will encompass Conner's major body of work over the past 50 years and will include Cosmic Ray (1961), Mongoloid (1978), The White Rose (1967), and his final work Easter Morning (2008). Longtime friend and co-conspirator Dennis Hopper will be on hand both nights to introduce the programs, along with guest of honor, Jean Conner.

Program curated by Timoleon Wilkins, Michelle Silva and Steve Anker.
Total running time for the evening is approx. 90 min.

Submission Guidelines for individual photographers and group exhibition proposals.

Thank you for your interest in submitting work to the Griffin Museum of Photography. Work is reviewed by the exhibition committee every two months. Responses are sent within roughly 2 - 3 months of receiving the submission.

To be considered for individual or group exhibitions, please submit the following:

15 to 20 images that represent a completed body of work. Work in progress is not considered. Work may be submitted in the form of slides, prints, or on CD. If sending a CD, please include proof prints of all images as reference.
Each image should be labeled with your name, title, medium, size and date.
Résumé, C.V., or bio (Including curators and all photographers if submitting group exhibition proposal)
Artist statement (optional).
If submitting group exhibition proposal include description of exhibition.

We all have BED but it’s mostly hidden away in a remote room upstairs in our houses or in the back room of our apartments. BED is rarely discussed, is mostly taken for granted, yet we use it more than anything else in the house, spending perhaps one third of our lifetime there.

BED is where we cavort, entertain and are entertained, where we eat, sleep, talk on the phone, read, watch TV, dream, hang out, escape to. We live much of our life there, mostly our private lives, including dying.

We want to see your photos of your BED (and/or others) and what you do while you are there. Make them as personal, fun, interesting, beautiful, startling as you can, no subject is out of bounds.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to all photographers, any format, any camera, black & white or color, any style acceptable. All types of photography-based work may be entered, including digital, alternative processes, photo collage and montage. Maximum finished print size is 16″x20″. Maximum frame size is 20″x24″.

BOOK POSSIBILITY: There is a possibility of a book publication based largely on the selected and submitted works for BED. All rights remain with the photographer.

Loyola Marymount University's Art Department presents "Freak Show," a partnership production by Kirsten Harkonen and Kendal Coopman, showing February 18-March 6, 2009. The artists' opening reception will be held Thursday, February 19 from 6-9pm at the exhibition space, the Thomas P. Kelly, Jr. Student Art Gallery.

Harkonen and Coopman are two young artists who've joined efforts to create a collective display. One from San Francisco and the other Valencia, the friends worked in collusion with their artistry somewhere in the middle. Both women are senior-year art major students at Loyola Marymount University, and they will transform part of their school into "Freak Show" with photographs and an installation for the soon upcoming three weeks.

Their collaborative photographic works will be open to the pubic at the Thomas P. Kelly, Jr. Student Art Gallery, which is located within the Fritz B. Burns Fine Arts Center on Loyola Marymount University's south side of campus.

The 2009 James D. Phelan Art Award in Photography is administered by SF Camerawork in conjunction with The San Francisco Foundation, and will honor two California-born artists. In addition to a $3,750 cash prize, each award winner is invited to participate in an exhibition at SF Camerawork.

The James D. Phelan Art Awards were established by the trust of James D. Phelan (1861-1930), former San Francisco Mayor, United State Senator, and arts supporter, to recognize the achievements of California-born artists in a variety of disciplines. The Phelan Art Award is also given in printmaking, film, and video and is part of the Arts Awards Program at The San Francisco Foundation.

Eligibility
Application for the 2009 Award in Photography is open to any California-born artist. Current California residency is not required. Proof of birthplace will be requested. Past winners of the James D. Phelan Art Award in Photography are ineligible.

Jurors
The 2009 Award will be juried by Allan deSouza, Professor of New Genres, San Francisco Art Institute Cathy Kimball, Executive Director, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art.

Katy Grannan received her BA from the University of Pennsylvania and her MFA from Yale University. Desotorow Gallery is seeking submissions of photographic works for a juried exhibit scheduled for February 13-18. The exhibit, “The Extended Moment,” will be juried and curated by a Guest Curator, Craig Stevens. Work submitted to this exhibit should explore the idea of the extended moment- a longer exposure, multiple exposure, or a sequential imagery theme.

Craig Stevens is currently a photography professor at Savannah College of Art and Design, and he has also taught at the Maine Photographic Workshop for 29 years. He has written numerous articles about photographic craft and vision and is a respected workshop leader and teacher. Linhof is the oldest existing camera manufacturer in the world with a tradition of more than 120 years in developing and manufacturing view cameras and optical equipment for applied photography. Linhof is market leader for professional large format camera systems. The company has been actively engaged in supporting the projects of younger people for many decades and now Linhof again is inviting entries for their bi-annual competition for the best images of younger photographers preferably taken with large format cameras systems.

In view of the worldwide distribution of Linhof cameras we anticipate a high volume of entries for this prestigious award. The topic of the subject matter is the urban environment. The theme of the competition is "Human Cityscapes". The photographic realisation should comprise the urban environment "City" showing contrasts or unity of citizens and architecture. The role of the human being within the urban architecture is the idea. Linhof expects a conceptional work relating to the theme with probably new personal reflections.
The Linhof Award for Young Photography is based on the fine art aesthetic principles of large format photo graphy. The competition is issued worldwide by Linhof Präzisions-Systemtechnik GmbH / Munich.
The competition is open to all professional photographers and students of photo graphy. Maximum age is 35 years. Every participant may submit a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 8 entries all dealing with the theme of the contest. All works should have been taken since 2008.

The Study Abroad Office is holding a photo contest open to all LMU students, faculty, and staff, to promote International Education Week. The contest will also raise funds for Operation Smile, a non-profit organization that helps repair childhood facial deformities around the world.

Guidelines:
1. Submit pictures from Tuesday, Oct. 28 - Friday, Nov. 14
2. Photos must be pictures from abroad in a hard copy form
3. Sizes 4x6, 5x7, or 8x10 are acceptable
4. Cost is $2 for the first two photo submissions; $1 per photo for additional photo submissions

All proceeds from this contest will be donated to “Operation Smile.” Photos should be submitted to the Study Abroad Office located in University Hall, Suite 1840 in person. (We are not accepting digital submissions or submissions by mail.) All pictures must be appropriate for public viewing at LMU.

ONWARD ‘09: 2nd Annual Juried Photography Competition

Project Basho is pleased to announce ONWARD ‘09, annual juried photography competition, exclusively featuring new and emerging photographs’ work.

This year, we are inviting Peter Barberie, Curator of Photographs at Philadelphia Museum of Art as juror. The deadline is November 14. For more information, please download the entry form from our website.

Theme for the competition is open, and any photographic medium including but not limited to historical processes, traditional silver printing, chromogenic printing and digital processes can be submitted for consideration. Selected photographers’ work will be featured in a group exhibition at Project Basho Gallery. Further recognition will be awarded in the form of cash awards and opportunities for a two-person show at Project Basho Gallery.

Last year’s competition attracted close to 300 photographers nationally and internationally who submitted over 1200 images. totaling $496,000 to 87 performing, literary, media and municipal arts
organizations throughout Los Angeles County to support paid internships
for college undergraduates in summer 2008.

Full-time college undergraduates either resident in or attending school
in Los Angeles County are eligible for the internships. Interns must
also have completed at least one semester of college by June 2008 and
must not graduate before December 2008. Interns are paid $350 per week,
for 40 hours a week, for 10 weeks and take part in educational and arts
networking activities. Through the program, interns gain a deeper
understanding of the work involved in nonprofit arts administration and
the role of the arts in a community, and develop business skills that
can be put to use in their future careers. Internship host organizations
help mold and shape potential new workers in the arts field who may go
on to arts leadership positions on staffs, boards or as volunteers.

Two Loyola Marymount University graduates, Thomas Inesi (Class of 1996) and Steve Ratter (Class of 1990) both of whom have successful careers as artists in video game development will talk about the video game industry in Los Angeles as a city of many opportunities for an artist that who wants to get into games/software/digital media. As a developing industry, the possibilities for success can seem overwhelming, but whatever discipline or creative skill you excel at, there will most likely be a useful, real-world application in the creation of interactive gaming.

Thomas Inesi and Steve Ratter, will talk about multimedia career opportunities for the potential Game Developer, Art Director, Concept Artist, Environmental Artist, Levels Artist, 3-D Artist, Animator, Sound Designer, Scriptwriter and Programmer.

Thomas Inesi is currently a Senior Character Artist at High Imact Games. He has previously worked at Electronic Arts as a UI artist on "Medal of Honor Underground", and as Character Artists at Spark Unlimited and Treyarc (a division of Activision) where he worked on "Call of Duty 3" and "Bond".

Steve Ratter is a Senior Environment Artist at Insomniac Games. He has previoiusly worked at Dreamworks Interactive, Electronic Arts, Inscape, Philips Media, and was a member of the initial team that started Spark Unlimited. His game credits include "Small Soldiers", "Chaos Island", "Medal of Honor", "Call of Duty" and most recently, "Resistance: The Fall of Man" for the Playstation 3.

"Unlike many photographer's, I don't have a story of picking up my first camera at 3 years old, instantly falling in love. Photography fell on my lap, on accident. I had the choice to take painting or photography, and I don't have the patience for painting. Little did I know that it would turn into a passion, that almost never exits my brain. I'm always thinking of crazy ideas that have an extravagant factor, i.e. I can't afford it or I don't know how to do, yet I always come out with something that is cohesive with my original idea. I learn more every day, venturing out to try new techniques and I enjoy it even more than I could have ever imagined."

Martin Kersels to Speak at LMU

Martin Kersels is known for his performance-oriented works and his mechanical sculptures made of found objects, moving parts, images, and sound. Kersels was a member of a neo-Dadaist performance group with bizarre costumes and awkward movements. Like himself, 6 feet 7 inches, weighing over 300 pounds, the work of Kersels is large and awkward. His sculptures and performances are often humorous and light-hearted at first, however, they reveal the true embarrassment of not fitting in. Kersels most recent works take his themes of scale and the effects of gravity into more conceptual directions.
Kersels was a member of SHRIMPS and several of his pieces have included music soundtracks composed by Mark Wheaton. His first piece was Objects of the Dealer, 1995. In 1997, he was part of group exhibitions; CA 9001-185, W-139, Amsterdam; COLA: 1996-1997 Individual Artist’s Grants, The Municipal Art Gallery, Los Angles; 1997 Biennial Exhibition, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and The Power of Suggestion, LACMA. His most recent works include The Tumble Room and Dionysian Stage. The Tumble Room presents objects in a young girl’s bedroom which turns into remains to be refined, using humor and pathos to heal the reality of everyday life. In Dionysian Stage, its on-going movement creates reflections on the ceiling like a disco ball. Kersels currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Mr. Kersels visit is part of the ARTin LA/LA Now course in the Department of Art and Art history and is sponsored by the College of Communication and Fine Arts Visiting Artists and Lectures Fund.

On View at the Laband: DISSENT! 1968 & Now

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the global student uprisings of 1968, Dissent! 1968 and Now examines the oppositional power of art. The exhibition features some of the most influential images of protest from 1968, including works by the French Atelier Populaire, Sister Corita and Rupert Garcia. Students from eight of Los Angeles’ prominent art schools (LMU, CalArts, Cal State Long Beach, Occidental, Otis, UC Irvine, UCLA and USC) have also been invited to confront mainstream media, political practices and other issues affecting the contemporary world. The works will be selected by well-known Los Angeles protest artist Robbie Conal along with co-curators Erik Benjamins, a senior at LMU, and Carolyn Peter, director of the Laband Art Gallery. Erik Benjamins, a senior studio arts major, explains "the idea for the show came out of my self epiphany in creating work that is political and socially responsible and the importance of students today creating work that addresses such issues instead of simply a celebration of aesthetic and technical skill. To coincide with the fortieth anniversary of global protest we featured a small portion of political art from around the planet as well as work from student artists from seven los angeles institutions. The studio visits were great in that it allowed us to meet with the submitting artists and talk with their work face to face. Students today should all be political entities regardless of educational focus. The arts hold a strong relevance because of the universal applicability towards the medium in affecting the masses. Such means to document and express can act as a powerful tool for cultural thought and progress."
